Beskrivelse

For several years, the research group “Active Citizenship, Welfare and Solidarity” has produced excellent national and international research of high relevance and considerable impact on the development of Norwegian and European welfare policy. The group contributes to research for promoting sustainable welfare, solidarity, and quality of life for all citizens. This ambitious goal requires systematic efforts to expand and renew knowledge on developments in citizenship, representation of disadvantage groups, living conditions, universal health, unemployment, welfare and solidarity in general. Current topics for research include challenges related to an aging population, raising number with chronic diseases, environment and sustainability, migration and integration, disability and participation, challenges of minority and youth unemployment, school dropout, social processes related to urbanization, emerging forms of solidarity, etc. Through the establishment, coordination and development of the research group, the team has been able to mobilize significant intellectual and financial resources from both national and international sources. These include numerous RCN and EU projects, hundreds of publications, strong networks and collaboration with stakeholders and practitioners, as well as the establishment of larger research platforms such as the Nordic Centre of Excellence in Welfare Research: Reassessing the Nordic Welfare Model (REASSESS, 2007-2012). Over time and across disciplines, this unique research group has established itself as a stable key node for research and knowledge dissemination on citizenship, welfare and solidarity of the Norwegian, Nordic and European societies. The research group is a NOVA-centred network cluster, with Professor Bjørn Hvinden as overall Coordinator, although always flanked by different Project Managers related to current research activities. The Department of Health and Welfare Studies at NOVA supports and host the research group. Academic centres of gravity are welfare sociology and political science, with adjacent subdisciplines such as social economy, government, governance, management and law, and cultural approaches to welfare and solidarity. Organization and leadership of the group are deliberately "flat" to facilitate inclusion, flexibility and dynamism, thus stimulating both open and social innovation. The group vigorously utilizes new technology to reduce transaction costs, methodological advances, as well as drawing systematically on academic and administrative support structures (not least in the EU context). In sum, the organization and the leadership are well-suited encouraging efficient and high-impact research on citizenship, welfare and solidarity.
