Beskrivelse

The groups of the GLYCONOR consortium share an interest in the regulation mechanisms of glycan synthesis in different biological systems, the analysis of the underlying protein-carbohydrate recognition events, and the physiological importance of glycan structures - a theme covering a broad spectrum of topics that we expect will give important functional insights into biological systems. We have recently combined our resources into a glycobiology consortium at The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo - now recognized as a scientifically important area for intensified support during the next 5 year period (2008-2012).

Our consortium has obtained a 5 year grant from the FUGE (functional genomics) program of the Norwegian Research Council (NFR) for the period 2008-2012. The aim is to strengthen and co-ordinate our studies of the biological role of glycans. We also aim at developing a technology platform for characterization of glycans on glycoproteins and glycolipids, for example by MS, but also by chemical and enzymatic means, as well as by HPLC. Our services will be developed with an interface towards and in collaboration with PROBE and the Oslo node, headed by Dr. Bernd Thiede, The Biotechnology Centre, UoO.
