About
Medhat Yousef is an Egyptian scholar. He has a Bachelor of Education/Pedagogy and a Bachelor of Theology from Egypt. He has previously worked as a priest and a Hebrew Bible instructor. Youssef holds a master's degree from VID Specialized University and is currently a Doctoral Research Fellow in Theology at VID. He is working on a dissertation under the supervision of Dr. Marta Lavik and Dr. Knut Holter. His area of interest lies in studying how ancient texts are interpreted and used in a modern context. Youssef's dissertation analyzes the function of the motif Egypt in the rhetoric of Isaiah 19. In addition, it looks into examines how this ancient text is applied in the rhetoric of Christians in contemporary Egypt. Isaiah 19 is included in a compilation of prophecies concerning various t nations, as found in Isaiah chs. 13-23. In most of these prophecies, foreign nations are portrayed as being subject to divine judgment. However, in Isaiah 19, there is a noticeable shift in tone between the first and second halves of the chapter. The initial part (vv. 1-17) describes the judgment that Egypt will face, while the latter part (vv.18-25) speaks of a future of blessing and salvation for Egypt. The primary research question in the main part of the dissertation is: How does the motif of Egypt function rhetorically in Isaiah 19 as a whole? Furthermore, as the study delves into the significant role Isaiah 19 plays in contemporary Egyptian Christianity and theology, I also ask: How is Isaiah 19 understood and used within contemporary Egyptian society contexts? Hermeneutical approach, with rhetorical criticism applied to analyze and systematize the literary elements.
