Our planet is a complicated dynamic system that is constantly evolving on a continuum of scales. On the large scale, the geography of Earth changes over millions of years due to the slow but constant motion of the tectonic plates and the convection of the mantle beneath them. On very long timescales, plate tectonics is a fascinatingly dramatic phenomenon that assembles and dissects continents, opens and closes oceans, and constructs and dismantles mountains.
