Co-ordinator of the "Blue Nile Public Health Project", a primary health care and research project including schistosomiasis control in Western Ethiopia (Addis Ababa and Oslo University). - 1989 - 92 : Own PhD work with data from Ethiopia (University of Oslo and Addis Ababa). - 1994 - 2001. Co-ordinator of a multi-professional research project in Ethiopia financed by NRC and NUFU: "Control of schistosomiasis by local production and use of the soap berry endod".(Universities of Addis Ababa, Debub, Leiden, Aas and Oslo) - 1994 - 2001: Advisor for the "Balu Jiganfoi and Didessa vally integrated health and village development project" in West-Ethiopia financed by NORAD. - 1996 - 2004: Project leader (financed by NRC and WHO) for the Project: “Female Genital Schistosomiasis in a community in Zimbabwe: Treatment outcome and its possible association with HIV.” (Univ. of Zimbabwe, Leiden and Oslo). - 2001 – 2008: Project leader (financed by NUFU, NRC etc.): “Reversibility of liver fibrosis as shown by ultrasound in schistosomiasis, and their relation to nutritional status. A field study in Ethiopia” (Univ. of Addis Ababa and Oslo). - 2003 - 2006: Co-ordinator (financed by Helse SØ): Epidemiology, antiretroviral treatment and prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV/AIDS: An operational approach in Haydom, Tanzania”. (Univ. of Dar es Salaam and Oslo). - 2008 – present): Advisor / mentor (financed by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, EU etc.): “Schistosomiasis in young women and girls of KwaZulu Natal, manifestations, effect of treatment and association with HIV” (Univ. of KwaZulu-Natal, Copenhagen, Agder, Leiden and Oslo). - 2011: Co-ordinator for “The LIFAP group: Liver- Infections Fibrosis and Antioxidant Phytochemicals: A transitional approach between laboratory research in Norway and clinical research in Yemen and Africa”. (OUS, Univ.of Oslo, Agder, Addis Ababa, Leiden, Univ. College London Medical School). Financed by Helse SØ, OUS. - 80-100 scientific publications in referee-based journals and abstracts at international congresses. Also numbers of other papers, lectures, consultancies etc. related to health problems in developing countries. - Thesis (Dr. med.Oslo /PhD) 1992: "Studies on schistosomiasis and other infections in the Ethiopian Blue Nile valley with special emphasis on diagnostic improvements." Advisory on PhD and Master level: Advisor for 11 previous or ongoing projects and presently mentor for large international projects. Teaching experiences: - Course coordination and teaching in courses of parasitology and tropical diseases for Norwegian infectious disease specialists and other health personnel (1983 - 2002). - Course coordination and teaching of students in the Oslo Masters Course of International Community Health (1995-2002). Still ongoing teaching committement. - Numerous teaching invitations in Norway and abroad. Academic memberships: Vice-preses Agder Academy of Science and Letters (2002-2010) and membership of this and several other international academic organisations.
